Phones and tablets are becoming more 'the norm' now in place of dedicated GPS devices.
There's plenty of pro's and con's either way, we'll get into that a bit more in a future article.
One feature that's particulary handy, is voice commands.
Taking calls, checking and responding to messages, safety alerts from inReach or Zoleo, playing music and changing volumes etc, or just the simplicity of getting close to town and switching from Topo maps to Google or Apple maps, with a simple, find fuel, or navigate to the closest pub, hands-free and on the fly is brilliant.
We use both iOS and Android.
Apple's 'Hey Siri' still has the edge, with almost faultless voice recognition and commands being executed quickly. 'Hey Google' has definitely improved over the last year, and if you're using a Samsung, Bixby is ok, but when using an Android device, using a blend of Google and Bixby has been needed to get close to Siri.
We can already hear the 'I ride to get away from all this tech stuff' , but for us, anything that makes Adv riding easier, safer and more connected is a win, choosing voice commands just seems smarter than trying to flick through apps whilst riding, or pulling over to stop as often.
See you out there!
