Montana tracks 5

About RiderRoute files.

Our RiderRoutes include GPS ready files that you can load onto your Navigation device. The files can be used for all navigator devices, as well as mobile device navigation apps such as GAIA, DMD2, Hema, My Trails etc, on Android or iOS.

These files can be downloaded to your phone/tablet and synced to your device with Garmin apps or downloaded to your PC/Mac and transferred to your GPS using Basecamp or drag and drop methods.

We recommend saving them to your device memory card in the User Data folder.

Some downloads also contain electronic itinerary and information sheets, these can be printed for your map pocket or saved to your device for quick reference.

Folder and track names (guide only) as sections are added, there may be variations.

  • Folders are named in order, ie: GSR01 (Great Southern Ride Stage 1)

  • Tracks shown as GSR1-Day1A, ie: (Great Southern Ride Stage 01-Day1- section A)

  • Waypoints shown as G01-01, ie: (Great Southern Ride Stage 01-Waypoint 01)

  • Alternate tracks 1: Bypasses are shown as AltBP, they can be used in case of poor track or weather conditions or as short cuts. Bypasses are usually easier tracks and roads.

  • Alternate tracks 2: Extensions are shown as AltE, they are used for lookouts, other points of interest or fuel and services that may be located off the main route.

  • Alternate tracks 3: These are considered harder sections and will be listed as AltX.

  • The file names and sequence used helps keep your GPS and phone data organised, especially important if you haven't cleaned your system or where waypoints are not individually selectable to on/off on your device. It also helps when communicating updates for routes and individual sections, or if something goes wrong and you need help. ie: I'm on GSR1, Day1,between Waypoints G05 & G06.

  • We will at times update the file(s) with extra tracks and information. When updating a route, delete previous versions.

Please Note:

  • You need to have a GPS or a tablet/phone with a navigation app. If using a phone be sure it's well protected, water proof and it should have a charging method powered directly from your bike. It is highly recommended that this is a dedicated device rather than your primary phone.

  • There may be differences in specific details for event and GSR Routes.

  • Each ride is different, so are the way the folders are named and filed, this helps keep your device files in order for the ride chosen.

  • If you've already downloaded a particular ride, be careful downloading it again, unless you're prepared for duplicates which can become messy in your planner and device.

  • Our preferred apps are GAIA GPS (Android and iOS) or DMD2 (Android only), available from the app stores. If you're unsure how to load or use the supplied files, that's ok, just be sure to download the file to your device and we'll help you get sorted prior to leaving for your ride.

  • For organised rides, be sure you read and understand the details of each event or tour, paying particular attention to services and support provided, ie: support vehicle/recovery trailer, luggage transport or GPS loading.

By accessing links to download these files, you agree not to share any of the contents, in whole or part thereof (including screenshots of routes or itinerary) without permission.

General tips.

  • Switch your device to offroad mode and turn off auto re-routing.

  • Set user waypoints to medium or large for easy viewing.

  • Use 'Where To' feature to increase track thickness.(Garmin)

  • Download offline maps for your app for use in ‘out of service’ areas.

  • Select only the track(s) you're riding at a time to be visible on your device. Ideally, select an individual track,ie: GSR1-Day1A, when completed, switch it off, then select GSR1-Day1B, If you select more than one, use different colours (if avail on your device), be aware that we colour code all tracks, Garmin generally retains these colours, not all apps do, so check this after importing them.

  • If needed, you can search for the files on your device using tracks and waypoint names, they are loaded in sequence for this reason.

  • During rides that have multiple waypoints in a concentrated area, your screen may be cluttered, pay attention to the track and waypoints you are following.

  • Become familiar with your zoom function to ensure you're not worried about waypoints that are on a nearby track or trail. Some devices only show a symbol for a waypoint, so you may need to tap the icon to read the information.

  • If you have an earlier Zumo or BMW Navigator, using a phone app in conjunction with your GPS can eliminate continually tapping the GPS to display waypoint information.

  • Some apps, and GPS devices like the Montana series, Tread and ZUMO XT2 can have the waypoint info displayed 'on the fly', it makes things much easier.

  • Starting empty is a good idea! Backup your files, in Garmin, use Basecamp or save to your computer, if using an app, don't just delete from your device and hit sync, this will remove from your cloud too.
